This original piece was owned and donned the walls of the home of Gorilla Monsoon (Robert James Marella), when he resided in New Jersey. In 1999, a neighbor helped him move some items out of his house. Gorilla Monsoon gifted this piece, to the lad, directly off the living room wall of the home as a thank you gesture. Monsoon graciously signed, dated and inscribed it to the young lad; “To Bob, Your Pal, Gorilla Monsoon, 4/18/99” in black sharpie, on the back paper of the frame. Awesome display, beautiful original artwork, ready to hang and presents wonderfully.

Gorilla Monsoon (sub. for Buddy Rogers) defeated WWWF World Champion Bruno Sammartino when the match was stopped due to blood.

Buddy Rogers retired prior to their scheduled title rematch on 4 October 1963, in Jersey City, New Jersey’s Roosevelt Stadium. Sammartino instead that night had his first match against new number one contender, Gorilla Monsoon. Because Monsoon won the match by blood stoppage, Sammartino retained his WWWF Championship Belt.

Monsoon first wrestled Bruno Sammartino for the WWWF World Championship on October 4, 1963, at Roosevelt Stadium, in Jersey City, New Jersey. Monsoon qualified by winning a partially televised Ring Wrestling Magazine tournament, where he pinned Killer Buddy Austin in about a minute. Monsoon’s disqualification win over Sammartino in NJ triggered a series of rematches at Madison Square Garden, and they would renew the feud again there in 1967. At the end of the Jersey City match as Monsoon was sitting on the mat a fan (not part of the show) jumped into the ring and broke the back of a wooden chair over Monsoon’s head.
