On offer is this original press photograph from 1956 picturing the defending welterweight champion Carmen Basilio in the 12th round of their March 14, 1956 first meeting in Chicago. Johnny Saxton won this this and the welterweight crown via 15 round decision. Carmen Basilio graciously autographed this photo for me years ago at the International Boxing Hall of Fame weekend in Canastota, NY. It is boldly signed by Carmen in black sharpie. It is in excellent condition, it measures 9″ x 7″ and has the original press association stamp on the back.
Carmen Basilio was born on April 2, 1927 in Canastota, New York. He won the World Welterweight Title on June 10, 1955 from Tony DeMarco. He won the World Middleweight Title from Ray Robinson on September 23, 1957. He retired after losing to Paul Pender on April 22, 1961 with a final record of 56-16-7 with 27 KO’s.
