Jimmy Ellis Autographed Original “Fan Fotos” Photograph

James Albert “Jimmy” Ellis (born February 24, 1940) is a retired boxer from Louisville, Kentucky. He fought in what some consider to be the greatest heavyweight era of all-time. The top heavyweights of the time included Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Floyd Patterson, Jerry Quarry, Oscar Bonavena, George Chuvalo, Jimmy Young, Ron Lyle, Buster Mathis, Ken Norton, Cleveland Williams, and Earnie Shavers, among others. Ellis held the WBA World Heavyweight Championship from 1968 to 1970. He was a skilled boxer, with a good chin and, as Angelo Dundee always stated, much better punching power than many expected.

Offered here is a signed original “Fan Fotos” photograph of Jimmy Ellis. Jimmy graciously signed this for me in bold blue sharpie at the International Boxing Hall of Fam in Canastota, New York. The photo measures 11 x 8 1/2 inches and is in NM/MT condition. Beautiful signature!

On April 27, 1968 at the Coliseum Arena in Oakland, California heavyweights Jerry Quarry and Jimmy Ellis battled for the vacant WBA heavyweight title. Ellis won a close majority decision to win the tile.

In 1967 Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali was stripped of his title for refusing induction into the armed services. The 1964 Olympic Heavyweight Gold Medalist Joe Frazier emerged as the best of a group of up and coming heavyweights during this period (1967-1970) when Ali was forced into retirement. Frazier won the New York version of the Heavyweight Title on March 4, 1968 stopping Buster Mathis in 11 rounds. He defended that title 4 times. On February 16, 1970 Frazier met Jimmy Ellis at New York’s Madison Square Garden to determine the new Heavyweight Champion. Ellis could not stand up to Frazier’s onslaught and was stopped in 5 rounds.

On May 10, 1971 at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto heavyweights George Chuvalo and Jimmy Ellis met in a featured bout. Ellis prevailed winning a unanimous ten round decision over Chuvalo.

On July 26,1972 at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali met Jimmy Ellis in a feature bout. Ali won the bout by a 12 round TKO.
