On August 28,1959 Carmen Basilio fought Gene Fullmer for the vacant Middleweight Title. Fullmer would win the bout by TKO in 14 rounds.

On June 29, 1960 at Derks Field in Salt Lake City, Utah world middleweight champion Gene Fullmer defended his title against Carmen Basilio. Fullmer had defeated Basilio in the year prior to win the crown and in this rematch Fullmer again prevailed, stopping Basilio in the 12th round.
